To get the best results from PermaPROtect Canvas Varnish, mix and apply as follows –
- Ensure the printed artwork is fully dry – allow at least three hours after printing, especially with dark, heavily-inked prints.
- Prepare a clean, flat and completely smooth work area. Put down a clean sheet of old inkjet media (a reject print or similar smooth paper) with an approximately 3” border to protect the table/work surface.
- Place the print in the centre of the protective sheet and, if necessary, hold it in place with masking tape at the print edges (apply it outside the viewable area).
- Mix the lacquer as follows –
- Gloss – shake the container for one minute (ensuring the lid is secure and also holding it in place). Remove the lid and then ensure you mix the bottom of the can, stirring with a clean flat screwdriver, or ideally a paint mixer, by hand for one minute.
- Satin – as above, but stir by hand for two minutes.
- Matt – as above but after two minutes of stirring, stop and check if there is any unmixed matting agent remaining. If there is, continue to stir vigorously for a further minute.
- Pour the varnish into a clean tray. Using a high-quality close-textured foam roller, lightly apply the varnish to the print with smooth, multiple passes both vertically and horizontally to build up an even coating. Note: the coating is white/cloudy when applied, but dries to clear after circa 20 minutes.
- Leave the print to dry and cure fully for three hours before handling, packing for transport, or mounting on stretcher bars.
- Wash the roller and tray thoroughly using cold running water.
Dilution of the PermaPROtect coating varnish can be carried out in a separate vessel BUT only once you have done the initial stirring process as per our instruction. A maximum dilution of 10% (nine parts PermaPROtect to one part cold water) is recommended if you wish to use in an automatic spray gun or similar to assist its flow and application to the media surface.
