About Tim
I took up digital photography in 2008, after a move from self-employment to a full-time job gave me spare time for a hobby.
I joined Smethwick Photographic Society a year or so afterwards, which has print exhibitions on the clubroom walls for most of the year, and this encouraged me both to improve my photography and to produce prints, as I wanted to see my own images on the walls
I love images in print, with my own images in virtually every room around our house in print sizes ranging from A2 to A0. I also produce an A3 photobook and A3 calendar of my images every year. I’m a great believer that an image doesn’t really exist until it’s printed.
I have had significant success in distinctions and competitions. Gaining my MPAGB in 2013, FIPF in 2016, and MFIAP in 2019, all with print panels. In 2014 my image “Gaze” won the Gold medal for best colour print in the PAGB Inter-Federation Competition, and the Gold medal for best image in the FIAP World Cup.
While I have been extremely successful, I’m actually not that competitive, as I feel that the only person you should be competing against is yourself, trying to enjoy yourself and become a better photographer.
I have tried most genres of photography, but now largely do model photography, where I am very well known for my distinctive nudes in the landscape.
I do feel that nude photography is not very well understood in the UK, compared to say other European countries, even though you will find most art galleries contain paintings of the nude.
I’m doing my bit to change this with my talks to camera clubs and other organisations. I have a number of talks including “Have I got Nudes For You”, “Nudes Night”, “Simply Nudes” and “Lulu – A Modern Muse”, where I try to demystify my genre of photography, and show that it’s just as much about light, composition and subject, as other genres.
My blog at timpile.co.uk is updated with new a new post every month, which encourages me to continually edit new images. You can also see my journey in photography, by looking at posts going back to 2010. I like to think of it as my online photography journal, which everybody can view..
I am currently the secretary of The London Salon of Photography, and have twice been president of my club Smethwick Photographic Society.
