The wonders of photography

I’ve been into photography for more years than I’d like to admit, but it’s still one of the pastimes that brings me the most pleasure and sense of achievement. When life feels too stressful or I’m feeling a bit low, picking up my camera gives me something to focus on—literally—and helps take my mind off whatever is bothering me.

I love heading outdoors, even just locally, to capture close-up shots of insects. There’s something satisfying about concentrating on such small subjects and being able to reproduce the fine details we might otherwise miss. I’m also lucky to have beautiful scenery close to home, where I try to make the most of the light on the landscape. It helps me connect with the world around me—and gets me out for some exercise at the same time. When I’m working on my composite images, there’s a real sense of achievement in seeing those ideas come together. I can lose myself for hours in that creative process, and if I manage to weave some emotion into the final image, that’s an added bonus. But creating the photographic print is the ultimate reward—it’s the moment everything comes together to produce something unique and, hopefully, beautiful.

Being part of a community

There’s also something very special about the community around photography. Being part of a photographic society, giving talks, and judging competitions has brought me into contact with so many kind, creative people. It connects me with others who share the same passion. Sharing ideas, learning from others, and simply chatting about photography—whether in person or online—those connections mean a lot.

Susan Sontag described photography as “a defence against anxiety”. Photography doesn’t solve everything but it’s been more than a hobby for me—it’s been a lifeline.
